The Backroom of the New Riverside Lounge (located in the New Riverside Chinese Restaurant at the corner of Barson St. and Riverside Ave.) was a Santa Cruz venue that hosted some of the area's first punk shows.

On September 1 and September 15, 1977, JJ180 and Caker & His Dogs performed there. By the end of the month, however, police suspended the club's entertainment permit citing neighborhood noise complaints. The city planning council said that the entertainment being provided at the location was not consistant with the zoning for that particular district. Eventually a compromise was made in which the Backroom sound proofed its walls and limited its performances to jazz and salsa bands.

It was managed by Jack Chin. Booking was done by David Schnitzer.
