Free Radio Santa Cruz (FRSC or Freak Radio) is a pirate radio station in Santa Cruz. It has been on the air for almost ten years without a license. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year in defiance of federal regulations. FRSC is part of a growing micro-radio movement, supporting the work of other independent media and other pirate and noncommercial web and broadcast stations.
Free Radio believes that the FCC has failed its mission of regulating the airwaves in the public interest and that the FCC is controlled by monied interests. They are on the air to protest corporate control of the airwaves, to bring local control and local accountability to the Santa Cruz community media, and to produce and broadcast a diversity of programs that are simply unavailable on corporate controlled stations. The station does not air advertisements, have pledge drives or have sponsors or underwriters. The station is able to remain on the air because of the commitment of its collective members and because of help from the Santa Cruz community.
