WikiSCUM is an encycolpedia of underground music in Santa Cruz County, California written collaboratively by its readers. The site is a Wiki, meaning that anyone, including and especially you, can edit any article right now by clicking on the edit button that appears at the top of the page you want to edit.

As you explore these pages, you may encounter two other Wikis which are vital to the WikiSCUM project:

  1. Wikia, the Wiki host-service that houses WikiSCUM. Some of the help and information pages that you visit might be Wikia pages.
  2. Wikipedia, the 1.5 million article, 100 language general encyclopedia that WikiSCUM (in some ways) mimics. Some of the help and information pages that you visit might be Wikipedia pages. Also, non-Santa Cruz County and non-music articles that you visit will probably be Wikipedia articles.

You'll know when you're reading WikiSCUM pages because they have a peachish-eggshell background (or on laptops and flat screens, a cream-purple background). If you have nagivated to a page that doesn't have that specific background color, you've probably reached an article that is in Wikipedia or Wikia.

Browsing WikiSCUM Edit

WikiSCUM contains information on Santa Cruz County bands, venues, shows and other topics related to the local music scene.

Blue links will take you to other articles written in WikiSCUM. Green links will take you to articles written in Wikipedia. Red links will take you to articles waiting to be written in WikiSCUM. Maybe you can start that article! If you're unsure which WikiProject you're in, just read the logo in the upper left-hand corner.

This project is just starting out, so we don't have that many articles to read yet, but you can already search for text in articles. Just go to the "search" field to the left, enter your search term and click "search".

Words that have blue letters link to other articles in WikiSCUM. Words that have red letters link to blank articles that still need to be written. We welcome and encourage you to write the article yourself.

If there's something we don't cover, or you're having difficulty finding what you're looking for, just ask us at The Hub.

Editing Edit

Everyone can edit pages in WikiSCUM, and we need your help! If you think an article needs improvement, new information, or copyediting, then make the changes yourself. You don't need anything special; you don't even need to be logged in. If you want to experiment first, without risk of "messing up" a real article, head over to the sandbox, where you can practice editing to your heart's content. To practice editing an existing page like this one, just copy and paste it from the article's edit page into the sandbox.

Go ahead, give it a try. If you make formating mistakes, there are people here who can correct them, and can teach you how to become a better editor.

Please note that this is a collaborative effort, and you don't own your edits. Once they're out there, they are subject to editing by others. Here in WikiSCUM, you are sometimes going to have to live with people editing what you've written. At first it might feel uncomfortable, but you'll see how it works to the betterment of the project.

PoliciesEdit

We've got a few policies and guidelines that you should consider. Most importantly, WikiSCUM is an encyclopedia only about underground music in Santa Cruz County. Articles not specific to this topic will be deleted.

While working here, we ask that you respect the contributors of others. If you don't agree with what they have to say or what they've written, then consider editing their work, or bring up the issue in the article's TALK page. But please do so kindly. Civility is important for the health and future of this project. We ask that you respect the people you're writing about. WikiSCUM is a community of people writing about itself. The pride and self-respect of others must be preserved. We also ask that you respect the privacy of others. Just because you know a secret as to why a band broke up doesn't mean you need to share it here. This is not a tabloid or a grapevine.

Articles should be written from a neutral point of view, representing differing views on a subject fairly and sympathetically. Articles should not be biased, and should represent differing views on a subject fairly. This is not the place to say that a band sucks or is the best.

All contributions to Wikipedia are released under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). This specifically ensures that Wikipedia will remain freely distributable in perpetuity. Please do not submit any content that is copyrighted without permission of the copyright holder. (See Copyrights for more information).

Lastly, WikiSCUM works by cooperation, and therefore mutual respect and civility should be practiced universally. Please assume good faith when you disagree with someone, stay cool, and talk things over civilly. It is good practice to provide an edit summary explaining your changes so as to assist others with noticing and accepting your changes. If you find that your edits get removed or modified, wait a moment before reinstating them. First check the page history, your talk page, or the article's talk page to discuss. See also Wiki-etiquette.

Don't be discouragedEdit

If you run into conflicts in your first forays into editing, don't let it get you down. In any collaborative project there are clashes. Have a look at the writers' rules of engagement page as well as the other articles in the tutorial wing below. Use them to help you resolve the problems and learn how to become an active and productive contributor.

And if there's anything you don't understand — be it technical or social — and you're not sure where to look, just post a question on The Hub, and someone will be happy to help you.

Have fun!
